Protect Partner Feature: Whale And Dolphin Conservation

In March 2018 The Mountain launched its new “Protect” line of T-shirts, hats, mugs and tote bags featuring some of the globe’s most vulnerable, threatened or endangered animal species. There’s a higher purpose behind Protect besides just putting out jaw-dropping images of animals: The Mountain is dedicating a percentage of Protect sales back to seven non-profit conservation organizations working to ensure a future on these magnificent creatures. Today, we take a deeper look at one of those seven organizations we’re partnering with.

WHO:  Whale and Dolphin Conservation

WHERE: Headquartered in Chippenham in Wiltshire, United Kingdom, with offices globally in the United States, Germany, Australia and Argentina.

THE SITUATION: Whales and dolphins are directly impacted by human activities; their survival is threatened by hunts, captivity, pollution, collisions with vessels, death and injury from fishing nets.

WHAT THEY DO (NUTSHELL VERSION): Through policy and public outreach, the WDC plans to put the right people in the right places to sustainably bring an end to whaling, captivity and bycatch, as well as advocate for cetacean rights and provide homes for whales and dolphins.

WHAT THEY DO (DETAILS): Since their start in 1987, the WDC has celebrated a number of victories - including successfully campaigning for the end of Icelandic commercial whaling, helping to create regulations to reduce entanglements of large whales and harbor porpoises across the east coast of the USA, and assisting the establishment of the world’s largest marine protected area in the world in the Ross Sea of Antarctica - which spreads across 1.55 million kilometers.

The WDC’s work is not done; they continue to advocate for changes in fishing practices and regulations, the establishment of more marine sanctuaries world-wide, and more, in order to protect these invaluable creatures.
