Getting to Know The Mountain®
Here at The Mountain®, we remember a time when t-shirts were blank. And white. And plain. Yet to millions of men, from those hustling business to those plying the trades, they served an important utility.
They were called undershirts. And they were boring.
But then came the ‘60s: A new era of peace, love, music – and yes, t-shirts – bringing people together to express their joy and identify their personalities in a bright bold way. A way that shouted who you were and what you stood for. A way that introduced a new kind of utility, a new reason this wardrobe staple would become a must-have for every man, woman and child who made up the tapestry of America.
Since that time, the t-shirt has become a powerful canvas for personal statements. Today, everyone from the California skater to the grandma at the grocery story can say: “This is who I am. This is what I like. This is what I believe.”
For all these reasons (and because sometimes, we just like to crack people up) we at The Mountain® love t-shirts. It’s also why we view ourselves as more than an apparel company. Why we take such huge pride in producing ArtWear™ – tees, tanks, hoodies, nightshirts, you name it – clothing that tells every individual’s story through unique, bold designs. Designs that let you project your personality, no matter how outrageous or heartfelt or epic. That tell the outside world what YOU are all about. What your tribe is all about.
We believe it doesn’t matter what the guy next to you on the bus thinks. It doesn’t matter whether your mother gets freaked out by what you’re wearing. What matters is how you belong. Where you matter. Because all are welcome at The Mountain®.
Our Mission: To be courageous in our commitment to helping people everywhere project their interests and passions outward for the whole world to see, expressing every inner enthusiasm in an undeniable way.
The Passion of the Tee
The Mountain® has been in business for over 30 years and we’ve been focused exclusively on what we’ve believed since 1996: printing high quality ArtWear™.
Since our earliest days, we’ve strived to offer value to our customers by running our company in a way that:
- Protects the environment
- Provides a strong and supportive work environment
- Supports our artist partners
- Generates awareness for deserving causes
From our iconic Three Wolf Moon® to our epic collection of Big Face™ tees, the subjects of The Mountain® designs are far-reaching, fearless, and bound only by the imaginations of our artists and the impressive range of collaborators that are drawn to work with our brand. Our cult-like following and undeniable vision have sparked trends and imitations, from the streets to high fashion runways.
What started as selling belt buckles and crafts and evolved into licensing tees for the Grateful Dead, Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix, has today grown to include hundreds of inspiring designs seen on the likes of Jack Black, Three Six Mafia, Tyler the Creator, Matty Mullins, Travis $cott, Jessie J, and NBA stars Joakim Noah and Matt Bonner.
As an eco-pioneer, we’ve worked hard to minimize our impact on the environment by using water-based inks, organic dyes, and other socially responsible production techniques.
Step 1: We start with a white t-shirt made from 100% natural USA cotton – right down to the thread holding it together. The Mountain®’s apparel is 100% Oekotex certified (one of the highest qualification worldwide), guaranteeing our shirts are free of chemicals harmful to your body.
Step 2: To color our garments, we use fiber reactive organic dyes to create over 800 t-shirt colors that are inspired by nature. Our shirts are dyed and printed in our own facility here in New Hampshire, making our carbon footprint much smaller than most companies dyeing and printing overseas.
Step 3: Our apparel is printed with environmentally friendly water-based inks. Most screen printers use solvent-based inks made primarily of plastic (petroleum) that have a rough feel and contain toxic phthalates. We are the pioneers of using water-based discharge ink and have perfected its use to create photo-realistic imagery that is not attainable by other screen printers.
Step 4: Our Dye Oxidation System (DOS) purifies our manufacturing process wastewater by removing color and additives without the addition of chemicals. The final, oxygen-enriched product works harmoniously with the microorganisms used in our local city water treatment facility. From June 2013-2014, we were able to reuse over 1,000,000 gallons of water that was purified by our DOS System.
Committed to the earth
Whether converting to natural lighting and installing filtered water fountains in our offices or working with suppliers to close the loop on cardboard waste and water recycling, being green means being mindful that every one of our earth-friendly processes has a direct impact on the environment and future generations.
Latent heat recovery and solar energy generation are a couple of other green initiatives we’ve recently begun. We even started an initiative called The Mountain Makers, which makes use of our t-shirt seconds, thirds and cover garments to turn them into up-cycled fashion apparel and products.
Everyone is Welcome in The Mountain Family
Our Employees: Fair Trade starts at home
The Mountain® has more than 250 full-time permanent employees, and is one of the largest employers in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. As a family, we thrive on the principles of a strong and supportive work environment.
Our Artists: Moving forward by giving back
We believe that quality of design means quality of purpose. From our very first t-shirt designed, and for more than 22 years since, The Mountain® has directly supported our extended family of artists and their families by giving a percentage of each shirt sold to the artist who created it.
Our Fans: Having fun, standing out and being epic
Our fans are zealous. They gather in tribes and wear our shirts to show their inner spirit. To declare their interests and passions for the whole world to see. And whether they want to project their own personal aura or that of the group, The Mountain® unites them and makes the moments more memorable.
Our Communities: Proud to make a real difference
Long before it was the “in” thing to do, the founders of The Mountain® have been taking the kinds of steps that matter. Our company has a long history of giving back and acting locally to build a stronger community.
Operation Hat Trick: A Purchase with a Purpose
Operation Hat Trick (OHT) generates awareness and support for the recovery of wounded service members and veterans through the sale of OHT-branded merchandise, and donates to those organizations that fulfill OHT's mission.
Founded at the University of New Hampshire, OHT is dedicated to Nate Hardy and Mike Koch, two navy SEALS who were killed in Iraq in 2008. We are proud to contribute a portion of the proceeds from every shirt sale from our recently launched Hero Collection, an inspirational line of tees featuring bold designs that pay tribute to the brave men and women who selflessly defend our country.
Through our wildly popular College Collection, supported by partnerships between The Mountain® and dozens of participating collegiate institutions, pro and minor league teams, retailers, and corporations, OHT has been able to help veterans and active service members recover from their wounds and go on to live their lives fully in many ways.
Best Friends Animal Society: Help for Amazing Animals
Our artist Dean Russo draws inspiration from the urban landscape of his native Brooklyn, New York and his love for animals to create truly unique artwork known for its brilliant colors and bold abstract designs of mesmerizing shapes and symbols.
Since 2015, a portion of every Russo Rescue Collection t-shirt purchase from The Mountain® has gone to support the important work of the Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization focused on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters. Since its founding in 1984, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters nationwide from 17 million per year to about four million.
Russo’s art and the Best Friends’ No More Homeless Pets Network focus on encouraging people to choose adoption, acknowledge the worldwide failure of breed-specific legislation, and combat dog fighting around the world.
Colorwear: Making the Moments More Memorable
The Mountain® recently launched its new ColorwearTM brand featuring over 200 captivating designs by wildly popular coloring book artists such as Valentina Harper, Angelea Van Dam (aka Hello Angel) and more!
As with our tees, we believe a shirt can be a canvas and art can be a brand. And with Colorwear, you become the artist. Whether you want to project the glow that emanates from your creative soul outward to the world, or simply color outside the lines, Colorwear is the awesome new way to wear art.
Our goal is to inspire every individual’s inner enthusiasm in an undeniably creative way. Simply choose your design and energize your imagination.
